Buratai reveals why army alone won’t end insurgency war

The immediate past Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Yusuf Buratai, on Thursday, reiterated that the ongoing war against insecurity could take Nigeria 20 years to overcome.

He also said that the army alone would not solve the problem alone because of many ungovernable spaces in the country. He noted that until those spaces had government presence the insurgency would not come to an end.

The former army boss made the comment while going through the Senate’s screening as an ambassadorial nominee.

Buratai also explained that the intellectual capacity of the army was so low, but now it is first-class, the cyber command is top-notch.

He also called for strong collaborations with the military to conquer the challenge.

“The military alone cannot solve this. There should be hospitals, schools, roads and govt presence in these communities. There are so many ungovernable spaces and until these spaces have government presence, it will not be resolved”, he said.

Buratai appeared before Senator Adamu Muhammad Bulkachuwa, APC, Bauchi North, who led Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs for screening as an ambassadorial nominee.

He appeared alongside other former service chiefs, who were appointed ambassador-designates, before for the senate committee for screening.

The other former service chiefs are retired Chief of Defence Staff, Abayomi Olonisakin, former Navy Chief, Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas and former Chief of Air Staff, Sadique Abubakar.
