FG can’t arrest, prosecute Nigerians for using Twitter, ECOWAS court rules

…says access to Twitter fundamental right

The Economic Community of West African States Court of Justice on Tuesday ruled against the Federal Government in a suit challenging Twitter suspension in Nigeria.

The ECOWAS court gave the ruling in a suit filed against the Nigerian Government by Social Economic Rights and Accountability Project, a Non-Governmental Organization.

SERAP had challenged the suspension of Twitter in Nigeria in the court.

In its ruling on the matter, the ECOWAS court held that the use of Twitter app is a fundamental right.

It also ruled that the Federal Government cannot arrest or prosecute anybody for using Twitter.
