NFIU presents report on Magu’s FOREX transactions to panel

Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit, on Monday, presented the report of its investigations on the suspended acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibrahim Magu, to the Justice Ayo Salami seven-man panel.

NFIU, it was learnt, submitted a comprehensive report on Magu’s alleged activities, including details of his relationships with some Bureau de change operators to the panel.

It was gathered that the NFIU kept report of all concluded investigations on its servers or cloud storage system, which is tamper-proof.

An official of the unit said that NFIU stores all its reports and information on its servers, adding that none of its concluded report is left or stored on computers for security reasons.

“So, they are tamper-proof and cannot be stolen by anyone as they are on our servers or cloud storage system,” he said.

The NFIU official also said the weekend the attack on the agency’s annex office at Wuse, Abuja, had nothing to do with Magu as the agency is also handling “bigger and more sensitive investigations.”

He, however, expressed hope that ongoing internal investigation would expose the perpetrators of the burglary at the NFIU office.

The source also disclosed that already, policemen and private security guards manning the NFIU office were being interrogated on the burglary.

Panel continues Magu’s grilling for second week running

Meanwhile, Justice Ayo Salami-led Presidential Panel investigating Magu over alleged corruption, on Monday, continued its sitting in Abuja with the embattled anti-graft agency boss appearing before it once again to answer more questions concerning his tenure in office.

Magu has been appearing before the panel sitting inside the old Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja since last Monday, when he was arrested and detained.

The EFCC boss has since been held in police custody from where he is moved to the venue of the panel’s sitting everyday.

However, journalists are still barred from the venue of the panel’s sitting.

Panel grills EFCC directors again as Magu’s questioning continues

Justice Ayo Salami-led Presidential Panel set up to probe the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission under the watch of its suspended acting Chairman, Ibrahim Magu, has again grilled some directors of the anti-graft agency.

The EFCC directors, as of the time of this report, were still answering questions from the members of the seven-man panel for the second time since last week.

Magu himself, on Monday, again, arrived at the State House Conference Centre of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, to continue to answer questions before the Presidential Panel on some corruption allegations. Magu was also still at the venue of the panel’s sitting as of the time of filing this report.

On Thursday last week, Secretary of the commission and some other directors were last week ordered by the panel to, within seven days, present before it files of cases handled by the EFCC and the cash transactions made by the anti-graft agencies since 2015.

The panel also grilled the so-called “Magu Boys” — a group of operatives believed to be favoured by Magu, the same day over alleged atrocities committed by them.

Such atrocities, according to sources, include blackmailing and extorting suspects, appropriating exhibits to themselves and selling off forfeited or seized assets without remitting the proceeds to government coffers.

These same allegations are also some of those listed in the memo sent to President Muhammadu Buhari by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, who demanded that the President should remove Magu from office.

Magu, who was suspended by President Buhari last week,  was arrested exactly a week ago and whisked to the presidential villa, where he has since been answering questions on various occurrences under his watch at the agency.

Except during the weekend, the embattled EFCC boss has appeared before the panel every day since his arrest last Monday.

The Justice Salami panel began sitting three weeks ago, but was only able to compel Magu to appear before it last week after his arrest.

The EFCC boss has been detained since his arrest while the agency’s Director of Operations, Umar Mohammed, has been instructed by the Presidency to take over the running of the commission in an acting capacity.
