Police arrest 3 for allegedly killing man in jungle justice

Police in Ogun State have arrested three men namely, Felix Sunday, Shomuye Musa and Oluwatobi Michael, for beating one Tunji George to death over an allegation that he stole iPhone 6 handset.

The suspects were arrested following a complaint by one Bola George at the Onipanu, Lagos Police divisional headquarters, that her brother was alleged to have stolen an iPhone 6 phone at Keke Hotel in Iyana Iyesi, Ota, in Ogun State.

The complainant said consequent upon the accusation, the deceased was tied up with rope in the hotel and tortured to death.

Having realised that the victim was about giving up the ghost, the suspects quickly rushed him to a hospital, but before they got to the hospital, the victim had died.

A statement by the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Abimbola Oyeyemi, said, “Upon the report, the Divisional Police Officer, Onipanu Division, CSP Bamidele job, mobilised his men and moved to the scene, where two of the suspects were apprehended”.

Oyeyemi, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, added that the remaining suspect was also later arrested in the hotel where the did was done.

On interrogation, the suspects informed the police that they strongly suspected the deceased as the person who stole the iPhone 6, and that in order to recover the said phone from him, they decided to torture him.

They said they did not know it would result in his death.

The corpse of the victim had been deposited at the morgue of the General Hospital, Ota, for autopsy.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Ogun State, Mr. Lanre Bankole, has ordered the immediate transfer of the suspects to the homicide section of the state’s Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, for further investigation and diligent prosecution.

The CP also warned that the Command under his leadership would not tolerate any form of jungle justice, and that whoever is caught in such act, no matter his status or position, will not be spared from prosecution.
