Reps demands suspension of four companies behind adulterated petrol

The House of Representatives on Thursday asked the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited to suspend the four companies involved in the importation of adulterated fuel into the country.

This was as the lawmakers also mandated its committee on petroleum downstream to probe the release and sale of the adulterated product by petrol stations across the country and to bring the culprits to book.

This followed a motion of urgent public importance by the Chief Whip of the House, Mohammed Monguno.

Recall that the NNPC GMD, Mele Kyari, had on Wednesday said that the ‘adulterated’ Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) also known as petrol was imported from Belgium by four companies – MRS, Emadeb/Hyde/AY Maikifi/Brittania-U Consortium, Oando, and Duke Oil as the culprits.

According to him, investigation by the NNPC revealed the presence of Methanol in PMS cargoes of the companies.

During the Thursday plenary, the federal lawmakers expressed worries over the effect of the adulterated petrol on vehicles and how the cost of transportation, goods, and service has increased.

According to some of the Reps members, the system is completely compromised, considering the processes which the fuel must go through before reaching the fuel stations.

They urged the governent to ensure that Nigerians whose vehicles and equipment were directly affected by the adulterated fuel are compensated.
