Police denies claim IGP shut intelligence, special tactical squads over Kyari

Police said on Tuesday that the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, did not shut down satellite units of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT), and Special Tactical Squads in the country, over the indictment of suspended Head of the IRT, DCP Abba Kyari.

Earlier on Tuesday, media report, (not FirstNews), had claimed that the IGP ordered the immediate closure of all satellite units of the IRT and Special Tactical Squad across the country due to the arrest of the suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, Kyari, and others by the authorities of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency over alleged drug dealings.

But the acting Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, reacting to the report, said the IGP never issued any such order.

Kyari, who was on suspension from the force over his ties to a disgraced fraudster, Ramon Olorunwa Abass, alias Ray Hushpuppi, entangled himself in more trouble after he tried to bribe an official of the NDLEA with $61,000 to facilitate the release of the cocaine seized from two drug barons.

Kyari is currently in the custody of the NDLEA prior to the conclusion of investigations which will determine whether he will be prosecuted.
