In what looks like an effort to save All Progressives Congress (APC) from looming crisis, President Muhammadu Buhari has allegedly ordered the immediate removal of Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni, as the Chairman, Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC) of the party and his immediate replacement with Niger State counterpart, Abubakar Sani Bello.
Sources said some aggrieved governors in the party had lodged complaints to Buhari over Buni’s lackadaisical attitude to conduct the party’s convention.
It was gathered that the president who was not pleased with the situation ordered Buni’s removal to save the party’s head.
However, Buni who is currently in Dubai for medical reasons was defended by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami; the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha and another top Villa players.
According to a source who hinted on the development, the aggrieved governors had convinced Buhari to remove Buni before he left the country, saying no preparation had been made for the convention.
His words: “They are creating unnecessary crises in the party, because of their selfish interests. How can they claim there are no preparations to hold the convention when various convention sub-committees have been announced; the zonal committee is announcing the zoning formula on Monday (today).
“Committees will be inaugurated in a few days. These people are not sincere. Some governors have been scheming to take over the functions of CECPC to further their own interests.
“The immediate way out of this is; if Buni voluntarily resigns, which he had two weeks ago threatened to do during the APC governors meeting in Abuja,”
This is coming as the president, on Sunday, before embarking on a two-week medical trip in the United Kingdom, assured party members that he would do everything to ensure the convention holds as scheduled on March 26.
