Bayelsa youths protest killing of woman by suspected herdsmen

ODAHIEKWU OGUNDE, Yenagoa

Angry youths from Opume community in Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State have gone on  the rampage following the alleged killing of a 39-year-old woman, Waadu Alfred, by suspected Fulani herdsmen.

The angry youths alleged that Waadu was raped, tied to a stake, and thereafter inflicted machete cuts on her body by her attackers which led to her death.

FirstNews learnt that after she was declared missing at the weekend, a search party was organised by the community and the search team discovered her decomposing body in the bush.

The aggrieved youths on Monday blocked the routes leading inward and outward the Nembe-Ogbia road, threatening a reprisal over the brutal attack and eventual killing of Waadu.

It was, however, learnt that it took the intervention of the police and elders of Opume Kingdom  to restore normalcy in the area.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Bayelsa State Police Command, Asinim Butswat, confirmed the incident.

Butswat, a Superintendent of Police (SP), said investigation into the incident had commenced already.

Recall that the Bayelsa State government had last week confirmed a heavy shoot-out between security operatives and some herdsmen in Ogbia-Nembe axis of the state.

The shoot-out reportedly led to the arrests of an unspecified number of suspects held at the Okaka Correctional Centre, Yenagoa, and the seizure of 150 cows currently in the custody of the state government.
