PDP cancels zoning, throws presidential ticket open

The Peoples Democratic Party on Wednesday said its presidential ticket is open to all qualified aspirants irrespective of their geopolitical zones.

This was announced by the party at its 96th National Executive meeting held on Wednesday in Abuja.

The NEC also advised that the party should work towards consensus candidacy where possible.

It noted the recommendation of the Zoning Committee that in the interest of justice and fair play, the party should take decision on zoning timeously so as to prevent complicating the process.

Recall that the committee led by Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom had recommended that the zoning, even though in the constitution of the party, be jettison for the 2023 general elections.

Speaking before the NEC meeting went into a closed door session, National Chairman of the party, Dr Iyorchia Ayu, said the National Working Committee had been working round the clock to reposition the party.

He said, “We are also working towards the National convention, and we will brief you latter. We want to thank those that have worked with us in the election process, those in the various committees.

“The mood of the party is changing, and everyone is ready to work hard and with this spirit nothing will stop us from taking over power from the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2023.

The Chairman PDP Governors forum and Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, said the transformation of the party was just starting and “we are with you all the way to the national elections.”
