Rent property to ‘Yahoo Boys’, get 15 years jail, EFCC warns landlords

Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has warned that landlords renting their property to internet fraudsters, popularly known as ‘Yahoo Boys’ risk a 15-year jail term.

EFCC has, therefore, vowed to arrest and prosecute landlords who rent their houses to ‘Yahoo Boys’.

The anti-graft agency disclosed this ahead of its next edition of its public conversation series tagged, “#EFCCConnect,” scheduled for 6pm on Wednesday.

The topic, “Give your house to Yahoo boys, spend 15 years in jail”, would be discussed by the Commission’s Legal and Prosecution Officers, Sylvanus Tahir and Cosmos Ugwu.

EFCC has often warned landlords and commercial real estate agents against renting properties to cyber criminals and fraudsters.

Early this month, the EFCC Chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa, while receiving the President of the Nigerian Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuers, Emmanuel Wike, in his office in Abuja, described real estates as safe haven for money launderers.

Bawa had said, “Just last month, we discovered a retired civil servant built a university in Kaduna and nobody, including your members, reported such transactions.

“So, I’m still bold to say that the real estate sector is one of the easiest places for money launderers. That’s why we’re empowering SCUML with all the necessary tools to enable us achieve our mandate, so whatever we are doing is backed by the law.”
