The over six months strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities may soon come to an end as the Federal Government is set to review its stance considered to be a hindrance to ending the impasse.
This is coming as the Federal Government has set up a tactical committee to review its ‘no work, no pay’ decision.
One of the reasons ASUU, after the last meeting with the FG, insisted on continuing with the strike, it was learnt, was the position of the government tht I would not pay the striking lecturers salaries for the months they were on strike
However, the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, after a meeting with Pro-Chancellors, Chairmen of Councils, as well as Vice Chancellors of universities, decided to review its stand
It was learnt that the decision to drop the no work, no pay stance, was part of the resolution at the meeting which was held behind closed-doors to resolve the industrial action by ASUU.
The Director Press and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Education, Ben Goong, made this known to journalists after the meeting which lasted for over two hours.
According to him, the committee is also meant to look into issues of increase in the salaries of the university lecturers and come up with workable solutions.
Goong did not give a specific timeline for the 14-man committee. He only said the committee is expected to come up with its findings in no distant time.
He added that the committee’s report would be forwarded to President Muhammadu Buhari for action.
