Former presidential candidate and activist Omoyele Sowore has been granted bail in the sum of ₦10 million, with one surety of equal value.
The surety must be a responsible individual with property worth the same amount and provide the original documents and passport photograph to the court registrar.
Justice Musa Liman, ruling on the bail application, also ordered Sowore to surrender his international passport to the court. He has 24 hours to meet the bail conditions or face remand in police custody.
This ruling followed the court’s decision to adjourn the case to Thursday, after arguments from Sowore’s lawyer, Marshall Abubakar, and prosecution counsel, Udey Jonathan.
Sowore, who faces 17 counts of cybercrime brought by the Nigerian Police, has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
These charges are linked to a tweet in which Sowore allegedly referred to Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun as the “illegal IGP.” The police claim this statement was false and intended to incite disorder.
While Sowore’s counsel sought lenient bail conditions, the prosecution opposed, requesting stricter terms to ensure his attendance at trial.
