Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has donated ₦50 million to the newly established Shanahan University in Onitsha.

Speaking at the institution’s official opening ceremony, Obi emphasised that knowledge is more valuable than oil in the future economy.

“Knowledge is the currency of the future,” Obi said, highlighting the importance of education in shaping society.

He praised the university’s founder, His Grace, Most Reverend Valerian Okeke, Archbishop of Onitsha, for his vision and dedication to education, noting the church’s global role in establishing quality institutions.

“Our focus as a society should be on preparing for tomorrow,” Obi added, urging the public to support the church’s efforts in advancing education.

In response, Archbishop Okeke expressed his gratitude for Obi’s support, recalling his contributions to missionary-owned schools during his tenure as governor. He also announced that students would enjoy free internet access until January 2025.

Professor Obi Oguejiofor, Vice Chancellor of Shanahan University, shared the institution’s goal of becoming one of Nigeria’s leading universities. He noted that the over 200 pioneer students are receiving tuition-free education for the current academic session.
