The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has said he would prioritise the rehabilitation of existing infrastructure over the construction of new roads and buildings if elected president in the January 16, 2027 presidential election.
Obi made the statement on Thursday during an exclusive interview with Arise Television, outlining what he described as a more disciplined approach to government spending and infrastructure development.
The former Anambra State governor said his administration would focus on repairing existing roads and infrastructure before embarking on new projects.
“We’ll fix the existing roads before building new ones,” Obi said.

He also said his administration would not approve the construction of new government buildings or extensions for the presidency, including facilities intended for the president or his wife.
“So, you’re not going to see the building of new guest houses, the building of anything. In fact, no new building. No new building,” he said.
According to Obi, the approach would apply broadly to government infrastructure, with priority given to restoring and effectively utilising facilities already available rather than creating additional structures.
“We’re not going to start building new extensions for the president or for the wife or for anybody. We will fix what is existing,” he said.
Obi’s position comes as political parties and presidential contenders intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections, with infrastructure, public spending and governance expected to feature prominently in campaigns.
The NDC candidate has repeatedly campaigned on reducing government expenditure, improving public infrastructure and directing resources towards areas he considers more directly beneficial to citizens.
