The Senate on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, asked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to exempt lawmakers from his November 23 directive withdrawing police officers assigned as security escorts for VIPs across Nigeria.
The measure, announced by the presidency after a security meeting in Abuja, orders that police personnel previously attached to VIPs be redeployed to core policing duties, citing a need to bolster police presence, especially in underserved areas.
According to the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), the directive has resulted in withdrawal and redeployment of 11,566 officers who formerly provided VIP protection.
During plenary, Abdul Ningi (Bauchi Central) said his police orderly was withdrawn early Wednesday.
He alleged that other VIPs continue to enjoy police protection and called for uniform enforcement of the directive.

Barau Jibrin, Deputy Senate President, confirmed that Senate leadership met Tuesday, December 9, and resolved to petition the presidency for lawmakers’ exemption.
He also directed the Senate Committee on Police Affairs to investigate what lawmakers described as “selective implementation” of the order.
The presidency has said the withdrawal aims to strengthen frontline policing and redeploy officers to areas facing high security demands.
