Vanguard Correspondent Chioma Onuegbu Dies, Tributes Flow

Vanguard Newspaper’s Akwa Ibom State correspondent, Chioma Onuegbu, is dead.

Her death was confirmed on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, in a statement by the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Akwa Ibom State Council.

The statement, signed by the chapel’s secretary, Udeme Utip, offered condolences to her family and colleagues but did not give details of the cause or time of death.

Onuegbu, a native of Akwuli Okwu in Ikeduru Local Government Area of Imo State, worked with Vanguard for many years, reporting from Akwa Ibom on politics, governance and social issues.

She was widely respected among colleagues for her professionalism and dedication to duty.

At a session held at the NUJ Press Centre in Uyo, journalists observed a minute of silence in her honour.

NUJ state chairperson, Nsibiet John, described her as a seasoned professional and said he would lead a delegation of journalists to her burial.

According to the funeral programme released by her family, an evening of tributes will hold on Wednesday, September 3, at 4:00 p.m. at the NUJ Correspondents’ Chapel office, Uyo.

A service of songs will follow on Thursday, September 4, at 4:00 p.m. A requiem mass will take place on Friday, September 5, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Brendan’s Catholic Church Parish, Okwu Ikeduru, Imo State, with interment immediately after at the family compound.

An outing and thanksgiving mass is scheduled for Sunday, September 7, at the same parish.

Her death has drawn tributes from colleagues and associates who described her as a committed journalist. She also played a central role in Vanguard’s coverage of the South-South, contributing reports that shaped public understanding of politics and development issues in the region.
