Guineaโ€™s junta leader, Mamady Doumbouya, is set to be sworn in as president on January 17, following his electoral victory last month, the presidency announced on Tuesday.

Doumbouya, who has rarely appeared in public since voting, will be inaugurated at the General Lansana Conte Stadium on the outskirts of Conakry, according to a social media post by the presidency.

Despite initially pledging not to run after seizing power four years ago, Doumbouya contested the election in which all major opposition leaders were barred. Guineaโ€™s Supreme Court validated his victory on Sunday, crediting him with 86.7 per cent of the vote.

Since his win, Doumbouya has addressed the nation only via a prerecorded video. Ahead of the election, he made just one public campaign appearance.

Doumbouya led a coup in September 2021 that toppled Guineaโ€™s first freely elected president, Alpha Conde. During his tenure as junta leader, he has imposed strict controls on civil liberties, banning protests and cracking down on opponents, with many arrested, tried, or exiled. Several political parties and media outlets were suspended, and demonstrations were prohibited in 2022.

A constitutional referendum in September 2025 allowed members of the junta to run for office and extended presidential terms from five to seven years, renewable once, clearing the path for Doumbouyaโ€™s candidacy.
