French defender Samuel Umtiti, a member of France’s 2018 FIFA World Cup–winning squad, has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 31.
Umtiti confirmed the decision on Monday through a message shared on his Instagram account, where he reflected on his career and expressed gratitude for the experiences he gained.
He noted that his journey in football had been marked by both successes and challenges but said he was stepping away without regrets.
The defender, who began his career at Olympique Lyonnais, rose to prominence after joining FC Barcelona in 2016.
During his time in Spain, he won two La Liga titles and three Copa del Rey trophies, establishing himself as one of Europe’s top centre-backs at his peak.

Umtiti’s career highlight came in 2018 when he scored the decisive goal in France’s World Cup semi-final victory over Belgium before helping Les Bleus lift the trophy in Russia.
However, recurring knee injuries limited his playing time in subsequent seasons, leading to loan spells at Lecce in Italy and Lille in France before his retirement.
Umtiti thanked his supporters, teammates, and coaches for their role in his career, while football bodies and fans across Europe have paid tribute to his contribution to both club and country.
