In order to assist Mr. Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, a group of Nigerian professionals located in the United States of America, USA, has pledged to organise at least 100,000 of its members.
The organisation known as “Naija We Can”, declared in Awka that the support they planned to provide would be the first of its type in Nigeria since the start of the country’s present democratic regime.
Successful New York-based FinTech attorney, Mr. Conway Ekpo, a member of the Naija We Can board, described the organisation as a well-focused political action committee with the goal of seeking the greatest outcomes for Nigeria.
Ekpo said: “Mr. Obi is the candidate electrifying young Nigerians and a powerful force ahead of Nigeria’s presidential election next February. He is energizing voters with messages of prudence and accountability that are amplified by an army of social media users.
“As part of a programme to achieve the objective, Naija We Can recently partnered with Columbia University’s Africa Business Club and Black Law Students Association to host Mr. Obi in New York for what it called a ‘Conversation on Afro Economics & Government Policy.”
He said that the gathering was held at the city’s Midtown Hilton and that more than 15,100 people attended.
He continued by mentioning the non-profit political group Naija We Can, which focuses on good governance in Nigeria and aims to empower Nigerians living abroad to improve the political and economic fortunes of their home nation through campaign funding and wise, effective leadership.
In spite of sincere calls for its implementation, he expressed regret that Nigerians in the diaspora were denied the right to vote. He expressed his happiness that Peter Obi has promised to make sure that diaspora voting is permitted if he is elected Nigeria’s president in February 2023.
“Naija We Can hopes that this will change if Obi and his running mate, Senator, Datti Ahmed emerge victorious in the election,” Ekpo said.
He was also pleased that Obi thanked Naija We Can and Nigerians living abroad for investing in a better Nigeria by endorsing the Obi/Datti ticket. He also urged his 2.4 million followers to visit the Naija We Can website, where they could make individual donations ranging from $25 to $2500 or even more, to help bring about the desired change.
Lawyer and Naija We Can founder Mr. Nexus Sea claims that Nigerians in the diaspora have invested nearly four times as much in the country as foreign direct investment, with $20 billion in home remittances in 2021 alone.
“Our goal is to help convert the diaspora’s economic power to political might by ensuring that Nigerians in the diaspora have a strong voice in selecting its leaders. Next year’s elections are critical and too important for us to sit on the sidelines,” Mr. Sea said.
Mr. Everest Njezi, a Texas-based board member, urged supporters to make sizable contributions in order to influence the results of the elections the following year.
