2027: Abure Pledges LP Support for Igbo Presidency

Labour Party (LP) National Chairman, Comrade Julius Abure, has reaffirmed the party’s commitment to supporting a presidential candidate from the Southeast in 2027.

His position was made public in a statement issued on Sunday, February 16, by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, following a rally in Abuja organised by Southeast LP members ahead of next year’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections.

Abure maintained that the party stood by its decision to field a candidate from the region in the 2023 presidential election and urged Igbo leaders to strengthen political alliances across Nigeria to improve their chances in 2027.

“Before the last general election, I had the impression that Igbos lacked unity. But after Peter Obi joined the Labour Party and I travelled around Nigeria for the campaign, I realised they are, in fact, among the most united, hardworking, and courageous people,” Abure said.

Reflecting on the party’s choice of a Southeast candidate, he added, “We faced numerous challenges, yet we remained resolute in giving the Southeast a shot at the presidency. We saw it as an opportunity to address their long-standing political marginalisation, and we did so bravely in 2023.”

Abure stressed the importance of political cooperation, drawing lessons from the Yoruba political trajectory.

“The Southeast must reassess its approach and build partnerships across Nigeria. The Yoruba only succeeded in clinching the presidency after forming strategic alliances. That is a valuable lesson for the Igbos,” he noted.

He further stated, “It is crucial for the Igbos to unite under a shared vision. While differences may exist, collective resolve is essential for achieving their political ambitions.”

Reaffirming Labour Party’s support, Abure assured, “The party remains committed to helping Ndigbo realise their aspiration to lead Nigeria.”

On the forthcoming FCT elections, Abure expressed confidence that Labour Party would dominate the polls, asserting that the real contest would be between LP and other political parties.

He also guaranteed a transparent candidate selection process, saying, “Nigeria’s political struggles stem from leaders undermining the will of the people. As LP Chairman, I am determined to put an end to such practices within our party.”

“For the upcoming elections, only our members will have the power to choose their representatives,” he concluded.
