Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar hosted the National Chairman of the Action Democratic Party, ADP, Yabagi Yusuf Sani, and other senior party executives at his Abuja residence on Saturday, January 31.
The meeting drew significant attention from political observers, coming at a time when opposition figures across Nigeria are actively positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Speculation has been mounting that former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi and Kano State counterpart Rabiu Kwankwaso could emerge as key figures on the African Democratic Congress ticket, potentially challenging President Bola Tinubu in the next general election.
This possibility poses a challenge for Atiku, who has been pursuing the ADC presidential ticket himself and is unlikely to welcome a scenario where the party’s nomination goes to either Obi or Kwankwaso.

Despite the timing of the meeting raising eyebrows, ADP Chairman Yabagi Yusuf moved quickly to clarify that the engagement had nothing to do with any potential merger between parties.
He further stated that the discussions were not aimed at convincing anyone to join the ADP either.
Nevertheless, the meeting has added another layer to the already complex web of opposition politics unfolding across Nigeria.
With multiple high-profile politicians vying for influence and positioning within the opposition landscape, every interaction between prominent figures is being watched closely by political analysts and commentators alike.
