2027: Atiku’s Aide Backs Alliance With Obi as Strongest Opposition Force

Demola Olarewaju, Special Assistant on Digital Media Strategy to Atiku Abubakar, has said a political alliance between his principal and Labour Party’s Peter Obi could produce Nigeria’s most powerful opposition force in the 2027 general elections.

Speaking on the Mic On Podcast on Sunday, October 5, Olarewaju said such a partnership would blend the strengths of both leaders and offer Nigerians a united and effective alternative to the ruling party.

“I think the best option is to have both of them on one ticket, so Nigerians can enjoy their combined leadership,” he said, describing the potential alliance as a “co-presidency” that would unite their ideas and visions for national progress.

Olarewaju also emphasised the need for a political platform that champions the nation’s youth, suggesting that any new or reformed opposition party should give between 35 and 50 percent of leadership positions to young people and women.

“Nigerians need a party that values the energy and creativity of young people — including Gen Z and even Gen Alpha,” he stated, underscoring the growing demand for inclusive governance.

He commended Atiku’s loyalty and consistency in politics, recalling how the former vice president supported Goodluck Jonathan in 2011 despite losing the primaries. “That’s who Atiku is,” Olarewaju said.

According to him, Atiku remains the strongest opposition figure for now but is open to stepping aside for a younger candidate if he loses in future primaries.

Since the 2023 election, where Atiku and Obi ran separately, public interest has grown around the idea of opposition unity as a strategy to challenge President Bola Tinubu’s administration in 2027.
