Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has announced that key opposition figures are coming together to mount a formidable challenge against President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 election.
Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, March 20, at the Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja, Atiku stated that the gathering signified a new phase of opposition unity aimed at unseating the current administration.
“This marks the beginning of a coalition of opposition ahead of 2027,” he declared when asked if the event was a sign of a formal alliance among political opponents.

Several prominent opposition figures were in attendance, including Peter Obi, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, represented by Yunusa Tanko; former Secretary to the Government of the Federation Babachir Lawal; former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai; National Secretary of the Coalition of United Political Parties Peter Ameh; and Segun Showunmi, convener of The Alternative.
The development follows Tinubu’s recent declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, which led to the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and the state’s lawmakers.
The move has sparked backlash from opposition leaders, who accuse Tinubu of using his authority to favour political allies.
