2027: Funso Doherty Declares Lagos Governorship Bid Under ADC

Former Lagos State governorship aspirant Funso Doherty has formally announced his intention to run in the 2027 gubernatorial election under the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The declaration was made on Friday, April 10, during a party meeting and later publicised by ADC Vanguard, the party’s coalition mobilisation arm, via its X handle.

“With all humility, I would like to announce my candidacy to be the next governor of Lagos state,” Doherty said in a video clip shared by the group.

ADC Vanguard, in its post, expressed confidence in Doherty’s candidacy, stating that the party has a viable contender in Lagos.

“Indeed the ADC (the main opposition party) has a strong and sellable candidate in Lagos State,” it posted.

Doherty’s latest move follows his recent exit from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), where he had been a member since 2024. He resigned weeks earlier, citing internal crises within the party.

In a resignation letter shared on his X account on March 29, he referenced a court judgment that invalidated the PDP’s 2025 convention and worsened factional disputes within the party.

He maintained that the ruling effectively placed control of the party in the hands of a faction linked to individuals supporting the re-election of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), a situation he said he could not endorse.

“I will not be a party to sustaining this tragic travesty. The people of Lagos State, many of whom have waited far too long for meaningful improvement in their day-to-day lives from the actions of their government, deserve much better than that,” he said at the time.

Doherty had earlier contested the 2023 Lagos governorship election on the ADC platform before later defecting to the PDP.
