2027: Obi Free to Fly Labour Party Flag — With or Without Me, Says Datti

The Labour Party’s 2023 vice-presidential candidate, Datti Baba-Ahmed, has thrown open the door for former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, to contest the 2027 presidential election under the party’s platform, whether or not he chooses him again as his running mate.

Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Wednesday, Baba-Ahmed described Obi as a leader he holds in high esteem.

One of the key individuals I have tremendous respect for is Peter Obi. I welcome him openly. The Labour Party welcomes him to retain the party ticket and contest in 2027, with or without me. And the ADC is welcome to adopt a southern candidate,” he stated.

Baba-Ahmed stressed the need for leaders who embody capacity and compassion, capable of driving Nigeria’s development agenda.

“We want capacity. We want compassion. We want people who will develop Nigeria, leaders that matter, leaders that deliver promises, not those who will promise governance and deliver disaster,” he said pointedly.

Addressing Obi’s presence at coalition talks with members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Baba-Ahmed dismissed claims of anti-party activity.

“This is not anti-party. It’s an unfolding situation. A coalition means parties, interest groups, and individuals coming together. I have attended such meetings, and Peter Obi is welcome to continue attending,” he clarified.

On zoning ahead of the 2027 elections, Baba-Ahmed made his position clear:

“I am of the opinion that the South should produce the president,” he declared.
