Former Borno State governor, Ali Modu Sheriff, believes Peter Obi could soon return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and possibly run for president on its platform in 2027.
Obi, who contested in 2023 under the Labour Party, recently teamed up with other top opposition politicians through a coalition led by the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The coalition’s main goal is to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next presidential election.
Although Obi has not officially left the Labour Party, there’s growing speculation that he might still pursue the PDP ticket, which is also being eyed by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, July 28, Sheriff shared his thoughts on the likely shape of the 2027 contest.

“Atiku has been the vice president of Nigeria. So for him, (it is) president or nothing. Peter Obi ran under the Labour Party. His ambition is to become President,” he said.
“Information available to me is that any moment from now, Obi would go back to the PDP and run as a presidential candidate under the PDP.”
Sheriff also questioned the political influence of some other likely contenders, such as former Rivers governor Rotimi Amaechi.
“So that leaves Vice President Atiku and (Rotimi) Amaechi. So tell me, which states do they control?” he asked.
Sheriff’s remarks have sparked fresh debates over the future of opposition politics and whether a united front could truly emerge before 2027. With key players like Obi, Atiku, and others still weighing their options, Nigeria’s political scene is already heating up.
