Hundreds of local government officials in Oyo State have urged Governor Seyi Makinde to run for president in 2027, saying his leadership could boost Nigeria’s economy and improve citizens’ welfare.
The call came on Tuesday, October 7, during a solidarity rally at the Secretariat in Agodi, Ibadan. The event drew local government secretaries, chiefs of staff to council chairmen, supervisory councillors, and special assistants from all 33 local government areas.
The officials were received on behalf of the governor by Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal, who welcomed the crowd at the Governor’s Office frontage.
Speaking on behalf of the group, Ayodeji Oladepo, Chairman of the Oyo State Supervisory Councillors’ Forum, praised Makinde’s record in the state.
He said, “The governor has demonstrated exceptional capacity for leadership and would bring transformative governance to the country if elected president. We will mobilise massive support for his presidential ambition ahead of 2027.”
Deputy Governor Lawal thanked the officials for their solidarity and described Makinde as “eminently qualified” to lead the nation.

He added, “Governor Makinde has significantly raised the standard of governance in Oyo State, and there is no doubt that he would bring his excellent performance to bear on national leadership.
“The governor will respond to your request at the appropriate time.”
Speaking to journalists after addressing the rally, Lawal noted the enthusiasm of the attendees.
“They came from all 33 local government areas to urge the governor to contest for the presidency.
“The decision is entirely his, but I have assured them their message will be delivered. At the right time, the governor will respond to the callings and expectations of the people.”
The rally highlights growing support for Makinde at the grassroots level as the 2027 elections approach, signalling early momentum for his potential national ambitions.
