The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Northern Support Group has officially endorsed former President Goodluck Jonathan as its preferred candidate for the 2027 presidential election, describing him as the leader best positioned to unite the party and restore national stability.
The endorsement followed the group’s 8th meeting in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State, held on Wednesday, October 8, and Thursday, October 9.
In a communiqué signed by Northern Coordinator Yusuf Abubakar and North-West Zonal Secretary Adamu Narayi, the group urged a “coordinated and aggressive media campaign” in the North to mobilise support for Jonathan and promote the PDP’s agenda ahead of the 2027 polls.
Comprising PDP loyalists and grassroots supporters from all 19 northern states, the coalition also expressed confidence in the party’s National Chairman, Umar Damagum, applauding his efforts to reconcile internal divisions and reposition the party.
Abubakar said, “We remain optimistic that the PDP is not beyond redemption. With genuine commitment and collective sacrifice, our great party will reclaim power at the national level and in states currently under the APC.”
The communiqué stressed that the group would firmly support Jonathan in 2027, calling him a “tested leader” and “symbol of peace” whose record demonstrates loyalty and dedication to Nigeria.
“Dr Jonathan has never abandoned the PDP. He peacefully handed over power in 2015 and continues to stand for unity, progress, and stability. He is the man to restore hope,” Abubakar added.

The faction dismissed questions about Jonathan’s eligibility to contest again, describing the issue as settled and irrelevant to the party’s focus.
However, the group raised concerns about certain party officials allegedly undermining reconciliation efforts, claiming some National Working Committee members are “collaborating with the APC-led government under President Bola Tinubu while pretending to build the PDP.”
While commending Damagum for his leadership, the group called for disciplinary action against those engaged in anti-party activities, stressing the need for accountability to strengthen party unity.
The communiqué concluded by reaffirming the group’s belief in the PDP’s widespread grassroots support in the North and urged members to consolidate efforts in preparation for the 2027 elections.
“Our loyalty is to the PDP, not to individuals. Together, we will restore the party’s lost glory,” it stated.
Jonathan’s potential bid for the 2027 presidency continues to stir debates within the party, with members divided between backing his return and advocating for new leadership from other regions.
