Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, has directed members of his cabinet and other political appointees planning to contest in the 2027 general elections to step down from their positions.
The directive was issued on Monday, March 23, during the State Executive Council meeting held at the Government House in Gusau.
According to a statement released by the governor’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Idris, the decision aligns with provisions of the Electoral Act recently signed by President Bola Tinubu, as well as the election timetable announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
The statement read, “Today, Governor Dauda Lawal presided over the 64th Executive Council Meeting, where critical issues were deliberated for the development of Zamfara State.
“In his opening remarks, the governor directed that all council members vying for political offices should resign on or before the 31st of March 2026.

“The governor instructed the Secretary of the State Government to issue a circular to all political appointees aspiring for elective offices, requiring them to resign from their appointments before the due date.
“The Head of Service is directed to issue the same to all Civil Servants who nurse the aspiration to contest an election.”
The development comes shortly after Governor Lawal and his deputy, Mani Mummuni, switched from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress on March 9, 2026.
The move was attributed to internal crises and legal disputes within the PDP, which they said could affect preparations ahead of the 2027 elections.
A similar directive has also been issued in Delta State, where Governor Sheriff Oborevwori asked political appointees with electoral ambitions to resign on or before March 31, 2026, in compliance with the Electoral Act.
