An 87-year-old man, Dahiru Garba, has been remanded at the Yola Correctional Facility after allegedly attacking an Area Court judge with a cutlass in Fufore Local Government Area of Adamawa State.
Garba, from Korawa village, was arraigned before Chief Magistrate Court I, Yola, on September 7, 2026, on a one-count charge of causing grievous hurt under Section 219 of the Penal Code Law of Adamawa State, 2018.
The charge arose from an August 31 incident at Mayo-Ine Area Court, where Garba allegedly attacked the presiding judge, Dauda Hamman, during a case involving him and Ismail Yusuf.
Police spokesman SP Suleiman Nguroje said Garba repeatedly struck the judge’s hand with a cutlass, causing grievous injuries.

Garba was arrested after the incident, while the case was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Yola, on September 4 for further investigation and prosecution.
Before Chief Magistrate Ismail Bello Shelleng, Garba pleaded guilty after the charge was read and interpreted to him. Police said he expressed regret and blamed the devil for his actions.
The court ordered his remand pending further proceedings.
The Adamawa chapter of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria condemned the attack and called for stronger security for judicial officers, particularly those serving in Area Courts.
Commissioner of Police Kabir Hassan said the command would ensure diligent prosecution of the case.
