In a shocking and tragic incident, the Enugu State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of Somadina Orji, a young man from Igboariam in Anambra State, who is accused of murdering his mother, Mrs. Charity Orji, and his sister, Miss Ukamaka Orji. The grim discovery was made as the bodies were found buried in a shallow grave in their backyard at Umuagu Inyi, Oji River Local Government Area of Enugu State.
The disturbing event occurred on Monday, December 4, 2023. Reports suggest that the suspect, allegedly involved in dealing hard drugs, had ongoing conflicts with his family, particularly with his younger brother. The tensions escalated when the suspect reportedly attempted to harm his younger brother, prompting the late Charity to intervene and seek help from the community.
Community leader Mr. Ben Obi revealed that the suspect had expressed violent intentions toward his younger brother, leading to concerns raised by the family. Tragically, when Charity returned from a condolence visit, she was allegedly killed and buried by her own son in the family’s backyard. The younger sister had been missing for two weeks before the mother’s tragic demise.
Upon investigation and community interrogation, Somadina confessed to the heinous crimes, admitting to killing both his mother and sister. The remains were exhumed, and the suspect was promptly arrested by the police.
Charity, described as a hardworking woman who sold fufu to support her family, met a horrific end at the hands of her own son. Community leader Ben called for government intervention to prevent such tragedies in the future.
Coordinating President General in Oji River, Mr. Ejike Tasie, condemned the incident and highlighted the alarming use of hard drugs in the Inyi Community. He called on anti-drug agencies to address the drug-related issues within the local government.
Enugu State Police Command’s spokesperson, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, confirmed the arrest and ongoing investigation. Once the investigation is concluded, the suspect, Somadina Orji, will be prosecuted and brought before the court to face the charges related to the alleged matricide and sororicide.
