Senate urges tinubu to overhaul security strategies amid rising banditry concerns

The Senate has called on President Bola Tinubu to reassess the strategies employed by security agencies and institute a task force to investigate the implications of negotiating with bandits.

This resolution was reached on Wednesday following a motion moved by Senator Nasiru Zangon, highlighting the urgent need to review security approaches in combating bandit attacks across several states in the North-West and North Central regions of the country.

The Senate emphasized the necessity for the Federal Government to reintroduce patrol spots across states as a deterrent against bandit incursions.

During the extensive deliberation on the matter, which has been a recurring topic in the upper chamber, Senator Aminu Tambuwal proposed the declaration of a state of emergency in regions plagued by escalating terrorism.

Addressing the Senate, Senator Abdul Ningi expressed concerns over the capabilities of security agencies, suggesting that they are either ill-equipped, apprehensive, or inadequate in handling the estimated 5,000 to 10,000 bandits.

He advocated for the President to stipulate specific consequences and timelines for the appointed security chiefs, mandating them to address the banditry menace within a defined timeframe to ensure tangible results.
