Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago of Niger State has expressed concern over artisanal miners stockpiling firearms and explosives, warning of the security threats posed by their activities.
During a visit to Sabon-Pegi in Mashegu LGA, where a dynamite explosion recently claimed three lives and left several injured, Bago highlighted the dangers associated with unregulated mining in the region.
He noted that Niger State’s rich gold and lithium reserves have led to a surge in illegal mining, with many operators storing explosives and firearms.
“We call on residents to hand over their explosives and weapons to a security task force made up of law enforcement agencies, the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), traditional rulers, and other key stakeholders for proper handling rather than keeping them at home,” he stated.
To support those affected by the blast, he announced a ₦174 million relief package.
Accompanied by Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, and Senator Abubakar Sani Bello, the governor inspected the scene on Wednesday.
Speaking at the site, Idris relayed President Bola Tinubu’s concerns, describing the explosion as avoidable.
“The president has directed the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to ramp up awareness campaigns, especially among illegal miners, to prevent future occurrences,” he said.
He further stated that the president had instructed the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, NEMA, and other federal bodies to collaborate with the Niger State Government in providing assistance to the affected community.
Mashegu LGA Chairman, Umar Jibrin Igade, provided an update, confirming that 69 individuals were impacted, with two fatalities. He added that six injured persons had received medical treatment and were discharged.
He also reported that 17 houses were completely destroyed, 35 suffered partial damage, and nine vehicles were affected.
In response to the risks posed by illegal mining, the local government has imposed a temporary ban on the activity. Igade also urged officials in neighbouring Magama LGA to enforce similar restrictions to enhance security.
