Bob Menendez, the former New Jersey Senator, has been sentenced to 11 years in prison after being convicted of accepting bribes in exchange for political favors.
The sentencing took place on Wednesday, following a high-profile case that exposed the 71-year-old Democrat’s involvement in a series of corrupt dealings.
In 2024, Menendez was found guilty on 16 counts of accepting gifts, including gold bars, cash, and a Mercedes-Benz, in return for using his political influence to aid the governments of Egypt and Qatar.
The prosecution had requested a 15-year sentence, citing the “rare gravity” of his crimes and the severe breach of public trust.
During the sentencing hearing, Menendez pleaded for mercy, breaking down in tears as he told US District Judge Sidney Stein, “I have lost everything.” However, his emotional pleas were dismissed, with Judge Stein telling the former senator, “Somewhere along the way, you became, I’m sorry to say, a corrupt politician.”
Menendez’s legal team had requested a shorter sentence coupled with community service, but the judge rejected this, ordering that Menendez forfeit his ill-gotten gains, which amounted to $992,188.10, according to the US Attorney’s Office.
The former senator, who has served in the Senate since 2006, vowed to appeal the conviction.
In addition, Menendez has been actively seeking a pardon from President Donald Trump, after his request for clemency was denied by former President Joe Biden.
Echoing rhetoric from Trump’s own legal battles, Menendez referred to his case as a “political witch hunt”, claiming he was unfairly targeted due to his political standing.
Despite his efforts, the sentence stands, marking a significant fall from grace for the once-prominent politician.
