Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly have reiterated that the impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa as speaker was both lawful and in line with constitutional provisions.
Obasa, who was removed from office on January 13, 2025, while abroad, was accused of gross misconduct and abuse of office.
The lawmakers voted to replace Obasa with his deputy, Mojisola Meranda, who was elected as the new speaker following the impeachment.
However, Obasa has contested the decision, claiming that his removal was illegal and asserting that he remains the rightful speaker until proper procedure is followed.
In defense of their actions, the lawmakers referenced Sections 92 and 96 of the 1999 Constitution, which provide the legal framework for the removal of a speaker.
They emphasized that their decision adhered to the rule of law and was made in the best interests of the people of Lagos State.
In a statement issued after visiting the Lagos State Department of State Services (DSS) office in Shangisha on Thursday, the lawmakers emphasized that the impeachment followed due process and was in accordance with constitutional requirements.
The visit to the DSS came after Lanre Afinni and Sylvester Ogunkelu, two members of the Assembly, were detained for questioning regarding matters related to the legislative body.
“The Lagos State House of Assembly, as an independent arm of government, exercised its constitutional duty in the best interest of the people of Lagos,” the statement read. “Any attempt to challenge this lawful action undermines the authority granted to us by the Nigerian Constitution.”
The lawmakers also commended the DSS for its professionalism in handling the situation, confirming that all detained colleagues had been released.
They reiterated their commitment to fulfilling their legislative duties and called for respect for the sanctity of the legislative process, urging all stakeholders to avoid undue interference.
