The Federal Government has introduced the National Broadband Alliance (NBAN), a new initiative aimed at accelerating broadband expansion and improving connectivity across Nigeria.

Unveiled on Tuesday in Lagos, the initiative was announced by the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, who was represented by the Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission, Aminu Maida.

Tijani stated that broadband penetration had increased from 6% in 2015 to around 42% as of October 2024. To further bridge the digital divide, the government plans to deploy 90,000 km of fibre backbone across the country using a Special Purpose Vehicle.

“This expansion will not only improve access to reliable broadband but also empower Nigerians, particularly in rural areas,” he said.

Tijani noted that the initiative aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises technology, innovation, and collaboration as drivers of national prosperity.

While acknowledging the progress made, the minister stressed that more work was needed.

“While the progress made in broadband penetration is commendable, we recognise that much more needs to be done to ensure every Nigerian can enjoy the benefits of reliable, high-speed internet,” he said.

He highlighted the role of partnerships with donors, investors, and other stakeholders in achieving the targets set in the National Broadband Plan (2020–2025), which include 70% broadband penetration by 2025, a minimum internet speed of 25 Mbps in urban areas, and broadband access for 80% of the population by 2027.

“Achieving these goals will require more than just the efforts of the private sector.

“It will require a holistic approach that includes strategic partnerships with donors, investors, and other key stakeholders in accelerating the rollout of critical infrastructure,” Tijani added.
