A Lagos court has acquitted former Aviation Minister Femi Fani-Kayode of medical forgery charges filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Delivering her ruling on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, Justice Olubunmi Abike-Fadipe of the Special Offences Court in Ikeja ruled that the prosecution failed to establish a case against him.
“I have carefully studied the evidence of the prosecution witnesses, and I cannot find where the defendant committed the offences being alleged,” she stated.
“The prosecution has failed to establish a prima facie case which would require the defendant to open his defence,” the judge added before discharging and acquitting the ex-minister.
Speaking after the ruling, Fani-Kayode expressed relief. “I’m overjoyed that I’m finally free because I have been in and out of court for 18 years,” he said.
The EFCC had accused him of using forged medical reports to delay trial in an ongoing ₦4.9 billion fraud case.
The management of Kubwa General Hospital, Abuja, denied ever treating him or issuing the documents in question.
