Osun Crisis: NLC Directs Workers to Stay Home Over Safety Fears

The Osun State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has directed local government workers across the state to withdraw their services from Monday, February 17, citing security concerns.

In a statement signed by its chairman, Dr Christopher Arapasopo, and dated Sunday, February 16, the NLC said ongoing political tensions had created fear and uncertainty among its members in local government offices.

“The NLC is apolitical, but we will not allow our members to work in an atmosphere of insecurity,” Arapasopo stated.

Osun State has been embroiled in controversy over an alleged plot to reinstate local government chairmen and councillors elected in the October 15, 2022 poll.

First News earlier reported that Governor Ademola Adeleke accused his predecessor, Adegboyega Oyetola, of using security chiefs to enforce a non-existent court order reinstating the officials.

He called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene, warning that such actions could threaten peace in the state.

However, Osun APC spokesperson Kola Olabisi dismissed the claims, advising Adeleke to seek redress in court rather than “blackmailing” Oyetola, who now serves as the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy.

He argued that Oyetola had not incited violence and accused Adeleke of trying to block the enforcement of a legitimate court ruling.

Amid the dispute, the NLC urged all political actors to follow legal processes and ensure peace.

“The Nigeria Labour Congress has observed the ongoing political unrest, which has caused agitation and fear among our members working in local government areas across the state,” the statement read.

“In light of this, we hereby direct all our members working in Osun State local government offices to withdraw their services effective Monday, February 17, 2025, from 12:00 am (midnight).

“Our members will not return to work until their safety is assured and guaranteed, as is their constitutional right.”

The union also called on security agencies to protect lives and property in local government areas and the state at large.
