President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has signed two bills into law, establishing the Federal University of Agriculture and Development Studies, Iragbiji, Osun State, and the Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences, Iyin Ekiti, Ekiti State.
At the signing ceremony in Abuja on Thursday, President Tinubu emphasized that these specialized universities will enhance Nigeria’s educational landscape, drive research and innovation, and contribute to the country’s economic growth and development.
“These institutions will serve as training grounds for professionals in agriculture, science, and technology, enhancing Nigeria’s global competitiveness,” he said.
With this development, Nigeria now has 63 federal universities, according to the National Universities Commission (NUC).

Earlier, on February 3, 2025, the President also approved the establishment of the Federal University of Environment and Technology (FUET) in Ogoni, Rivers State, and the takeover of a forfeited private university in Southern Kaduna, which will now operate as a federal university.
The move aligns with the Federal Government’s strategy to expand access to higher education and boost specialized learning in key sectors.
