Kano Govt Allocates N8bn for Ramadan Feeding Programme to Support Less Privileged

The Kano State Government has set aside N8 billion to fund this year’s Ramadan feeding programme aimed at providing food for the less privileged during the holy month.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf disclosed this during the official distribution of 1,250 cartons of dates donated by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia at the Coronation Hall, Government House, Kano, on Friday.

The governor, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Farouk Ibrahim, reiterated his administration’s commitment to addressing hunger and supporting vulnerable residents during the fasting period.

“This year, we have allocated N8 billion for the Ramadan feeding programme to ensure that the less privileged have access to food during this sacred period,” the governor stated.

Governor Yusuf expressed gratitude to the Consul-General of Saudi Arabia in Kano, Khalil Adamawi, for the donation, describing it as timely amid the country’s current economic hardship.

He noted that this is the fourth consecutive year the state is benefiting from Saudi Arabia’s humanitarian assistance.

“The donation comes at the right time when we are making concerted efforts to provide food items to those in need, considering the economic hardship faced by citizens,” he added.

The governor highlighted the growing pressure on Kano’s infrastructure and resources due to its reputation as the most peaceful state in northern Nigeria, which has led to an influx of people from other parts of the country.

“Kano is the only inland of peace in northern Nigeria, and as a result, the pressure on the government, infrastructure, and healthcare system is enormous,” Yusuf remarked.

He also used the occasion to appeal to the Saudi government to assist in building a psychiatric hospital and renovating the Displaced Children Camp in the state to enhance the welfare of vulnerable groups.

The Commissioner for Humanitarian and Poverty Alleviation, Adamu Kibiya, commended Saudi Arabia for its consistent support, describing the Kingdom as a “pillar of humanitarian affairs globally.”

In response, the Consul-General of Saudi Arabia, Ahmad Adamawi, reaffirmed the Kingdom’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with Kano State in providing humanitarian aid.

The Ramadan feeding programme is part of the state government’s broader initiative to combat hunger and support vulnerable communities during the fasting period.
