Reps Urge FG to Bolster Security in Zamfara as Bandit Attacks Escalate

The House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government to ramp up security efforts in Zamfara State following a surge in banditry that has left several communities under siege.

The resolution came after Hassan Shinkafi, representing Shinkafi/Zurmi Federal Constituency, raised a motion during Tuesday’s plenary session, highlighting the deteriorating security situation in the region.

Shinkafi, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) member, expressed deep concern over the unrelenting attacks in Shinkafi and Zurmi Local Government Areas, which have resulted in killings, kidnappings, and mass displacement of residents.

He acknowledged the Zamfara State Government’s initiatives to curb insecurity — including the creation of a Security Trust Fund, Community Protection Guards, and enhanced intelligence-sharing mechanisms — but noted that these efforts have not significantly stemmed the violence.

The lawmaker lamented the military’s decision to withdraw troops from the area after only two weeks of deployment, a move he said allowed bandits to regroup and resume their attacks.

In a unanimous decision, the House urged the Federal Government to direct the military to establish permanent, well-equipped security bases in Magarya, Kurya, Kware, Dutsi, Mashema, Gurbin Bore, Boko, and Dole communities — all within Shinkafi and Zurmi LGAs.

Lawmakers also tasked security agencies with strengthening collaboration with the Zamfara State Government to combat rising insecurity, while mandating the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction to provide relief materials to victims affected by the crisis.
