Nigeria experienced yet another major power outage on Friday, March 7, following a partial collapse of the national electricity grid, plunging several cities into darkness.
The collapse, attributed to a system failure from the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), disrupted electricity supply across multiple distribution networks.
Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC) confirmed the outage, stating it occurred around 2:00 p.m. on Friday.
“Please be informed that we experienced a system outage today 07/03/2025, at 14:00 hours, affecting supply within our network. Restoration of supply is ongoing in collaboration with our critical stakeholders,” the company announced.

Eko Electricity Distribution Company also acknowledged the disruption, linking it to a reduction in power allocation from TCN.
“The current power situation is as a result of reduced power allocation from our TCN partners aimed at maintaining grid stability. The situation has resulted in unavoidable load shedding across our network,” the company said.
Despite assurances from distribution companies that efforts were underway to restore power, TCN spokesperson Ndidi Mbah denied knowledge of any grid collapse.
“We have light here now. What’s wrong with these people now?” she responded when questioned.
Nigeria’s power sector continues to face persistent challenges, with frequent outages despite repeated government interventions. This latest collapse marks the third nationwide blackout in 2025, following a similar incident on February 12. The country experienced 12 system failures in 2024 and over 100 in the last decade.
