Kebbi Govt Confirms Deadly Meningitis Outbreak, 26 Deaths Recorded

The Kebbi State Government has confirmed an outbreak of meningitis in Gwandu, Aleiro, and Jega Local Government Areas, with 26 deaths recorded so far.

State Commissioner for Health, Yanusa Ismail, announced this on Tuesday, March 11, at a press conference in Birnin Kebbi, revealing that 248 suspected cases have been documented. Of 11 samples taken for testing, three returned negative.

Providing a breakdown of fatalities, Ismail said Gwandu recorded 18 deaths, Jega six, Aleiro four, and Argungu one.

In response, the state government has approved ₦30 million for drug procurement to curb the spread. Isolation centres have also been set up to manage cases.

The commissioner advised residents to maintain personal hygiene and avoid crowded places to reduce the risk of infection. He also confirmed that samples have been sent to Abuja for further testing, and if positive, the government will request vaccines.

Cerebrospinal meningitis is a severe infection that inflames the protective membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord.

It is primarily caused by bacteria or viruses and can be transmitted between individuals. Common symptoms include high fever, intense headache, neck stiffness, nausea, vomiting, and light sensitivity. Without prompt treatment, it can result in severe complications or even be fatal.
