Rivers Political Standoff: Gov Fubara Seeks New Date for Budget Presentation

Amid ongoing political tensions in Rivers State, Governor Siminalayi Fubara has written to the State House of Assembly, requesting March 19, 2025, as the new date for presenting the state’s 2025 budget.

The governor’s letter, addressed to Speaker Rt. Hon. Martin Amaewhule, referenced his previous attempt to present the budget on March 12, which was thwarted when he was denied entry into the Assembly premises.

Fubara stated that despite following due process—including submitting a soft copy of the budget notice and attempting to deliver a hard copy through the clerk—he and his team were locked out of the Assembly.

The governor emphasized that his actions align with a Supreme Court ruling, which mandated that the legislative body carry out its duties within constitutional limits.

He also reminded the lawmakers that they had previously given him a 48-hour ultimatum to present the budget, even before officially serving him with a certified true copy of the judgment.

Governor Fubara reiterated his commitment to governance despite the ongoing standoff between his administration and the Assembly.

He urged all arms of government to prioritize the interests of Rivers people over political conflicts.

“No matter the depth of our differences, we believe the interests of the state and our people should take priority over political conflicts,” he said.

The governor also appealed for peace while commissioning projects in Okrika Local Government Area, calling on all political actors to respect the Supreme Court’s February 28 verdict and work towards stability in the state.

“The Supreme Court has made its judgment, and we don’t have any option but to abide by it. We are appealing to other parties: consider the interest of Rivers State. The only thing we owe this state is peace and development,” Fubara stated.

He concluded by expressing hope that the Assembly would grant his request and allow the budget presentation to proceed as scheduled.
