Ijaw Group Slams Wike Over ‘Minority’ Remark

The Ijaw National Congress (INC) has strongly criticized a recent statement by Minister Nyesom Wike, describing it as a misrepresentation of historical and demographic facts.

In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Engr. Ezonebi Oyakemeagbegha, the INC condemned Wike’s remark, stating that it “betrays a lack of intellectual depth” and does not align with the realities of Nigeria’s ethnic composition.

“For the record, the Ijaws are not a minority of minorities. We are the fourth-largest ethnic group in Nigeria and the largest in Rivers State, with a dominant presence in eight local government areas. Additionally, we have substantial populations in Delta and other states,” the statement read.

The INC suggested that Wike’s assertion may have been influenced by misinformation and reaffirmed the Ijaw people’s commitment to fairness, equity, and peaceful coexistence in the Niger Delta.

Furthermore, the group called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to caution Wike, urging him to focus on his ministerial responsibilities rather than making divisive statements.

Reassuring its dedication to regional stability, the INC emphasized its continued efforts in fostering peace and development in the Niger Delta.
