We Are Raising Children Not Ready for Life — Hamzat Warns Parents, Religious Leaders

At the 20th edition of the Late Justice Muri Okunola Memorial Ramadan Lecture, held at the Radio Lagos/Eko FM Marquee, Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, delivered a powerful call to action for parents and religious leaders, urging them to take charge of the moral reawakening necessary to reshape society.

Addressing the audience on the 16th of March, 2025, Hamzat underscored the pivotal role of families and faith communities in cultivating values that can steer society toward a better future.

However, he expressed concern over a growing lapse in parental responsibilities, attributing the erosion of moral values to the failure of many parents in providing children with the right foundation.

“Our sermons must now evolve in the mosques and churches. The issue now is how do we start to re-orientate ourselves toward making our society better. As we all know, the corporate world has changed the DNA of our women to what they are not.

“Let us in our sermon as Muslims deal with those contemporary issues, proffering solutions to them. If not, humanity can be in a big problem. My admonishment for us as parents and religious leaders is to look into issues that affect our society and the family unit,” he said.

He lamented that many young people today are unprepared for the realities of adulthood due to the lack of proper upbringing.

“We are now raising children that are not ready for life,” he noted.

Adding to the discourse, the Chief Imam of Adangba Central Mosque, Ejigbo, Lagos State, Imam Abdulrahman Sulaiman Adangba, in his lecture titled The Distress in Family Values & Morality in Our Society: A Multidimensional Approach, called on Nigerians, particularly Muslims, to embrace truthfulness, proper management, and reliance on Allah as guiding principles for societal reform.

According to the cleric, external peace in society is deeply connected to internal stability, and parents must actively foster homes grounded in integrity and discipline.

He emphasised that upholding strong moral values is essential for a thriving society and should be passed down to future generations.
