Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has strongly condemned the brutal killing of Northern travelers in Uromi, Edo State, describing it as a deeply saddening tragedy that reflects the worsening state of security in Nigeria.
In a statement posted on his X handle on Friday, March 28, Obi decried the recurring pattern of mob violence and jungle justice in the country, emphasizing that such acts have no place in a civilized society.
“Every Nigerian, regardless of ethnic or regional background, has the right to move freely and safely within our nation,” Obi stated.
He noted that the victims were wrongly accused of being kidnappers before they were gruesomely murdered by an irate mob. While acknowledging the need to combat crime, he warned that extrajudicial killings weaken the rule of law and fuel further violence.

The former Anambra State governor commended the government for swiftly condemning the incident and launching an investigation but urged authorities to ensure that justice is served not only for the slain travelers but also for indigenes of Edo State who have suffered similar fates.
“This tragic event underscores the urgent need for enhanced security measures and increased public awareness to prevent such occurrences in the future,” he added, calling for better collaboration between communities and law enforcement agencies.
Obi extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, urging Nigerians to work toward a society built on peace, unity, and respect for human life.
