Yunusa Tanko, Interim National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide, on Monday said Peter Obi remains a member of the Labour Party (LP) for now and has not joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
Tanko, who was a spokesperson for Obi during the 2023 presidential campaign, addressed the rumours during an interview on Monday, April 7, on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief.
“As far as I am concerned, His Excellency, Peter Obi, is a member of the Labour Party. It remains so until when there is any other thing that may come up,” he said.
His clarification followed recent claims by SDP’s 2023 presidential candidate, Adewole Adebayo, that Obi and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar had initiated talks to join the SDP.
Before Adebayo’s comment, SDP National Secretary, Olu Agunloye, had also alleged that Obi’s allies were lobbying his party in preparation for the next general election.

Tanko, however, maintained that LP would clarify its position publicly following the Supreme Court’s judgment on its internal leadership dispute.
“As I speak to you right now, there is going to be a meeting possibly within the week by the leaders of the party to make fundamental positions clear to everyone, and in line with the position of the Supreme Court ruling and that of course will put the whole matter to rest,” he stated.
The 2027 elections have triggered coalition talks among key opposition figures. On March 20, 2025, Atiku, Obi, former Kaduna governor Nasir El-Rufai, and others unveiled a coalition aimed at unseating President Bola Tinubu of the APC.
The opposition is banking on the combined strength of the over 12 million votes Atiku and Obi secured in 2023—more than four million ahead of Tinubu’s tally, according to INEC.
With internal wrangling in both PDP and LP, and discontent among APC loyalists, the SDP is reportedly gaining traction as a possible new home for aggrieved political players.
