The Nigerian government on Monday, April 7, 2025, marked the maiden National Police Day with a colourful and historic ceremony held at Eagle Square, Abuja, in honour of the vital role the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) plays in safeguarding national security and promoting peace.
The event featured a spectacular parade and tactical display by various units of the police, including the Police Mobile Force (PMF), Special Protection Unit (SPU), Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU), K9 Squad, and Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) teams. State-of-the-art equipment such as EOD robots, special intervention vehicles, and peacekeeping tools were also showcased, drawing applause from dignitaries and guests.
Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, PhD, in his remarks, described the day as a “symbol of renewed commitment to professionalism, service excellence, and deeper community partnership.”
He thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for declaring April 7 as National Police Day and reaffirmed the Force’s pledge to deepen ongoing reforms, uphold the rule of law, and strengthen its bond with the public.
President Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, was the Special Guest of Honour at the event. In his address, the President commended the bravery and resilience of Nigerian police officers and pledged his administration’s continued support for improved welfare, modern equipment, and technological advancements to boost operational efficiency across the force.

“This day is not just a celebration; it’s a reaffirmation of our commitment to a better-equipped, more efficient, and highly motivated Nigeria Police Force,” Shettima said on behalf of the President.
The event was attended by top government officials, state governors, members of the National Assembly, service chiefs, retired police officers, captains of industry, and other dignitaries, making it a memorable day in the annals of Nigeria’s security history.
The Nigeria Police Force expressed gratitude to all stakeholders and partners for their support, pledging to build on the momentum to enhance security and deepen public trust nationwide.
