China Invests $329m in Nigeria’s Power Sector to Enhance Transmission Capacity

In a bold step towards revitalizing Nigeria’s electricity grid, FGN Power Company has announced a strategic alliance with China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC), aimed at strengthening the country’s transmission capabilities.

The Managing Director of FGN Power Company, Kenny Anuwe, described the collaboration as a calculated move to build a resilient and expansive transmission network that can support the nation’s growing power generation needs.

“This partnership aligns with our broader strategy to modernize the national grid. CMEC’s participation enhances our ongoing work with Siemens Energy, which has been focused on generation and high-voltage transmission upgrades,” Anuwe stated.

The development marks another milestone in Nigeria’s effort to resolve longstanding issues in its power sector.

With widespread energy demands and aging infrastructure, the country has been pursuing global partnerships to overhaul its electricity delivery systems.

Vice President of SINOMACH, Li Xiaoyu, echoed the significance of the agreement, expressing gratitude to the Nigerian government for its confidence in the Chinese firm.

“We’re honored to contribute to Nigeria’s power transformation journey. This project stands to significantly impact electricity distribution and reliability across the country,” Li said.

The agreement, which is valued at $329 million, is part of a larger government push to modernize the grid and close the gap between power generation and transmission.

As Nigeria looks to meet increasing energy demands, collaborations like this one with CMEC are seen as key to unlocking the full potential of the power sector — and lighting up millions of homes and businesses nationwide.
